The Influence of Political Ideology and Intolerance for Ambiguityon Diverse Attitudinal Expressions of Heterosexism
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective.
This study analyzes the influences that exert intolerance of ambiguity and political conservatism
on homophobia, the rejection to homoparentality and prejudice toward people with HIV/AIDS.
Method.
In a sample from young adults in the city of Lima (
N
= 279) the ideological variables of the study were
evaluated through a quantitative research. The ideological variables evaluated were the scales of Right-Wing
Authoritarianism (RWA) and Social Dominance Orientation (SDO).
Results.
Using Path-Analysis, a direct
correlation between intolerance of ambiguity, RWA and SDO was observed. Also, a direct influence on the
intolerance of ambiguity, RWA and SDO on homophobia was also observed. Finally, homophobia exerts a
direct influence on the rejection to homoparentality and prejudice toward people with HIV/AIDS.
Conclusion.
The most politically conservative individuals are, at the same time, less tolerant to ambiguity. Hence they have
several over-simplified beliefs and prejudice toward homosexuality and any cultural expression they consider
associated with it.
