Abstract

Objective. To analyze the relationship between working conditions and the meaning attributed to work, in the configuration of burnout syndrome in psychologists linked to health institutions in several municipalities of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Method. Qualitative study with phenomenological design. In-depth interviews were conducted with nine psychologists linked to health institutions in Cali and other municipalities of Valle del Cauca. A content analysis was carried out using the Atlas.ti software. To do so, themes were developed as a recording unit, and the presence and frequency of categories as enumeration rules. Results. Participants have a perception of precariousness in working conditions, which generates high levels of stress and dissatisfaction. The presence of symptoms of emotional and physical exhaustion is associated with these conditions and the characteristics of professional practice. However, work is understood as a central experience in their lives, and as a primary element in the configuration of their professional identity. Conclusion. Some working conditions generate dissatisfaction in psychologists, but the meaning given to the exercise of their profession, their vocation of service and the self-care strategies used could constitute protective factors against the development of burnout syndrome.
