Abstract

Objective. is work addresses the immediate psychological impact of the quarantine in Colombia and adherence to the selfcare and social distancing recommendations during the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. Methods. A web survey answered by a valid
sample of 1606 subjects from different regions of southwestern Colombia was used. e survey included the General Health
Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12) adapted for Colombia and a set of questions designed from the prevention guidelines recommended
by the World Health Organization. Analysis of Variance (Anova) was used to process the information. Results. 3.8% of the
participants showed symptoms of anxiety or depression in a moderate or high range. It was recorded that 57% of the participants
never or almost never adhered to the self-care recommendations. In addition, there were signicant differences in psychological
distress and in adherence to self-care recommendations by gender, educational level and average income and the development or
not of telematic activities. Conclusion. ese results show that just two weeks into quarantine there were effects on people's mental
health. Furthermore, although people reported a high level of information regarding care measures, adherence to recommendations was low. Social inequality was an aggravating factor in mental health during quarantine and a barrier to the monitoring of selfcare measures.
