Más allá del azar: El impacto de la serendipia en la investigación médica contemporánea

Objetivo: Revisar la presencia y relevancia de la serendipia como método observacional en medicina y biomedicina, considerando los cambios en la investigación contemporánea y las regulaciones éticas. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda de artículos relacionados con el término serendipia en el ámbito médico y biomédico, publicados en bases de datos como Medline y Scopus, utilizando descriptores en ciencias de la salud DeCS y MeSH. Se incluyeron estudios cualitativos, cuantitativos y revisiones sistemáticas, aplicando criterios de inclusión y exclusión para seleccionar investigaciones de alta calidad. Resultados: Fueron seleccionados cincuenta y un artículos de diversas categorías, incluyendo revisiones narrativas, revisiones sistemáticas, cartas al editor, editoriales, ensayos clínicos e incluso artículos de reflexión personal relacionados con el término serendipia en el ámbito médico y biomédico. Conclusiones: A lo largo de la historia, la serendipia ha sido crucial en la medicina y la investigación biomédica, siendo una de las fuerzas más transformadoras en dichas ramas e interviniendo en descubrimientos como la penicilina, los implantes cocleares o el renacimiento clínico de la talidomida; sin embargo, la rigidez de los protocolos y las regulaciones más estrictas al momento de la investigación están limitando estas oportunidades de incitar a la mentalidad abierta, perdiendo la capacidad de observar, reinterpretar y cuestionar los eventos que no encajan con el paradigma establecido, lo que trunca el renacimiento de la serendipia.
