Abstract

Previous research highlighted the importance of social skills for the adaptation of individuals to social contexts
and for the satisfaction of interpersonal relationships. Previous studies also present the practice of choral singing
as a socializing and democratic factor. Objective. The purpose of this study is to establish the existence of
differences, or lack of them, in the repertoire of social skills among adolescents who practice choral singing, and
those who do not, and its consequences, in the opinion of the participants in this activity. Method. Qualitative
research was carried out with a semi-structured interview and quantitative exploratory comparative research.
Three practicing choir members were interviewed, with the application of the IHS-Del-Prette, and a socio-
bio-demographic questionnaire with 100 participants between 14 and 17 years of age, divided into groups
of participants and non-participants in choral singing. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using
the Content analysis method, and data gathered with the IHS were tabulated and analyzed using the SPSS
program by means of the
t-student
test for unpaired samples. Results. The interviews showed that the practice
of choral singing has an effect at various moments in their lives, producing feelings and opportunities as well
as fostering the performance of different skills. The results arising from the comparison of groups of choristers
and non-choristers showed significant differences with regard to the expression of positive affect, which was
higher among choristers, and the ability for conversation and feeling at ease with others, in the non-choristers.
Conclusions. The study discusses the relevance of this subject for the Social Psychology Community.
