Abstract

Objective
. Research on adolescent tobacco use has shown the signi
fi
cant in
fl
uence of family variables,
particularly, parenting style. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of each component of
fathers’ and mothers’ parenting styles on smoking susceptibility, cigarette experimentation and the current
tobacco use of boys and girls.
Method
. A non-probabilistic sample of 253 adolescent public high school
students in Mexico City answered a demographic questionnaire and the Steinberg’s Parenting Styles Scale and
Tobacco Susceptibility Scale.
Results.
Multiple regression analyses made it apparent that the father’s care is the
main predictor of susceptibility and experimentation in boys, and supervision and care from the mother are the
components that explained most variance for girls.
Conclusion
. Each of the components of the parenting styles
of fathers and mothers differently affects the smoking behavior of boys and girls.
