Abstract

Objective. To assess levels of perceived stress and depression associated with first-time pregnant couples. Method. Cross-sectional correlational study with convenience sampling, using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Ninety-four first-time pregnant Mexican couples from a public health institution participated. Results. Significant differences between sexes were observed, but in both parents, stress does not show severity (< 28) and depression is at null to minimal levels (M = 4.64, SD = 3). Spearman correlations between groups are positive and significant in perceived stress (rs = 0.26, p = 0.001) and depression (rs = 0.30, p = 0.001). Conclusion. The findings reveal low severity, but according to the cutoff points, women exhibit higher prevalence of stress (10.6%) and depression (24.5%), compared to men (6.4% and 9.6% respectively), agreeing with other reports. The associations between the couple show dependence, therefore, a close relationship in which the behavior of one affects the outcome of the other is assumed; this represents a risk factor for the dyad. A deeper look into risk factors associated with the public health problem involving the variables of the study is proposed.
